Festivali südames on meil õnnestunud kutsuda erinevad teatritegijad looma kolme “performatiivset keset“, mis on mõeldud selleks, et võtta publikut vastu kui külalist ja anda tema kohalviibimisele performatiivne raamistik. Publik võib neis kesetes veeta terve õhtu või liikuda sealt edasi teiste sündmuste, ruumide ja etenduste juurde ning tulla nende juuurest tagasi. Need keskmed püüavad käsitleda külalislahkust kui praktikat kolmel eri viisil.
Festivali viimasel päeval avavad Singapuri kunstnik Ong Keng Sen ja Belgia dramaturg Elke Van Campenhout Bogarti baari vägagi eriliseks vestlussaateks. Viie tunni jooksul toob GIFT SHOW kokku rühma festivalil osalenud ja kohalikke kunstnikke ja mõtlejaid, et luua külalislahke ja vaba ruum mõtlemiseks, vestlusteks ja meelelahutuseks. Põhinedes külalislahkuse lihtsamaile põhimõttele, vahetavad külalised ja võõrustajad kinke ja mõtteid, sisenedes vestluste karusselli. Selleks õhtuks on baar muudetud kohtumispaigaks võõrastele, kes tutvuvad üksteise ja publikuga oma festivalikogemuste, hotelli-, linna-, kunstielu- maailmamajanduse kogemuste või mille iganes muu baasil, mis meid ühendab. Kuid mis on see miski, mida teineteisele anda? Millal muutub kingitus mürgitatuks või sellest lihtsalt ei saada aru? Ja mis siis edasi teha?
Elke Van Campenhout on uurija ja kirjanik. Ta on töötanud kriitikuna flaami ajalehele ja raadiojaamale, oli etenduskunstide-ajakirja Etcetera toimetaja ja on dramaturgina töötanud koos workspace nadine’iga ja Brüsseli Kunstenfestivaldesarts’iga. Ta on parasjagu uurimisprogrammi a.pass üks arendajatest ja koordinaatoritest.
Ong Keng Sen on teatritrupi Theatre Works juht ja lavastaja. Omaenese teatritöö kõrvalt on ta algatanud üle-Aasialise loomelabori The Flying Circus Project, mis on pika-ajaline uurimis- ja arendusprogramm. See uurib Aasia kunsti 21. sajandil ja keskendub nii traditsioonilise kui kaasaegse kunstiga tegelevate individuaalsete kunstnike loomestrateegiatele. Ta oli üks festivali IN TRANSIT 2002 ja 2003 kuraatoreid, mida korraldas House of World Cultures in Berlin.
At the core of the festival, we have been able to invite different theatre makers to create three “performative hubs”, artistic distributors designed to welcome the visitor as a guest and give his or her stay a performative framing. The audience may stay with the hubs throughout the evening or proceed from there to other events, to the rooms, to other shows and performances, and come back again. These hubs tackle the practice of hospitality in three different ways.
On the last day of the festival Singaporean artist Ong Keng Sen and Belgian dramaturge Elke Van Campenhout open the Bar Bogart for a very particular talk show. In the course of five hours, the GIFT SHOW brings together festival artists and a group of local artists and thinkers to create a hospitable and relaxed space for reflection, talk, and entertainment. Based on the most basic principle of hospitality, guests and hosts exchange gifts and talk, entering into a merry-go-round of conversation settings. For this evening, the bar is turned into a meeting space for strangers, picking up on their experiences of the festival, the hotel, the city, the artistic life, the world economy, and anything else that binds us together. But what is it that we have to give to the other? When does a gift become poisoned or simply misunderstood? And where do we go from there?
Elke Van Campenhout is an artistic researcher and writer. She worked as a critic for a Flemish newspaper and radio station, was the editor of the performance magazine Etcetera and collaborated as a dramaturge with workspace nadine and the Kunstenfestivaldesarts in Brussels. She is currently one of the developers and artistic coordinators of the a.pass research program. www.alphavillle.be
Ong Keng Sen is the head and director of the theatre group Theatre Works. Beside his own artistic theatre work, he has started the pan-Asian creative laboratory, The Flying Circus Project, which is a long-term research and development program. It explores Asian art in the 21st century and focuses on the creative strategies used by individual artists from all genres, from traditional to contemporary art. He was the co-curator of the annual IN TRANSIT festivals in 2002 and 2003, which are organized by the House of World Cultures in Berlin. www.theatreworks.org.sg
