Külalislahkusest

      Selle-aastases väljaandes jätab NU Performance Festival selja taha teatri ja asub vallutama argielu lavasid: 7 – 10. novembrini. Iga kahe aasta tagant toimuva rahvusvahelise kaasaegse performansi-ja teatrifestivali tänavuseks võõrustajaks on täielikult Sokos Hotel Viru. Ligi 50 performansi- ja teatrikunstnikku on hotellis neli päeva ja näitavad oma töid, mis on spetsiaalselt loodud või kohaldatud hotelliruumidele. Euroopa Kultuuripealinn Tallinn 2011 pidustuste raames kutsusime kokku teoseid, mis keerlevad külalislahkuse kui mõiste ja praktika ümber.

     Ajal, mil Euroopa sulgeb oma piire, mil ühiskondlikke ja etnilisi vähemusi koheldakse nagu väljaheidetud võõraid, mil teistsugusus peab kohanema valitsevate koodidega, mil seistes silmitsi mitmete kriisidega, tunduvad kunstid üleliigsed, muutub küsimus külalislahkusest oluliseks. Mis tähendab olla võõrustaja või olla külaline? Mida tähendab külalislahkuse etendamine? Millised on selle žestid kunstides ja ühiskonnas? Ja kuidas jagada koosolemise tunnet? Aga me ei otsi vastuseid manifestidest, pamflettidest või käsitlustest. Pigem oleme huvitatud väikestest žestidest, mis leiavad aset ühiskondlikes olukordades, erinevate praktikate ja tegevuste vahetus läheduses ja koos olemise vastastikkuses. Festival püüab pakkuda tegevusvälja, millel mõned neist küsimustest formeeruvad ja mõningaid saab praktikas testida. Seega tahame, et festival väljuks musta kasti esteetilisest turvastsoonist ja sukelduks ühiskondliku elu ettenägematustesse: etendus on küllalt mõjuv selleks, et muuta ja omada mõju väljaspool mänguvälja, mida oleme harjunud kutsuma lavaks ja teatriks.

     Sokos Hotel Viru ja selle vaheldusrikas ajalugu näib pakkuvat paljulubavat lava meie ideele tegeleda ja etendada külalislahkust. Peale hotelli KGB-tuuri külastamist mõistsime taas kord, et külalislahkus on väärastunud, kui seda kuritarvitab meelevaldselt üks valitsev partei või see on ükskõik millisele eliidile allutatud. Selle asemel on külalislahkus tingimusteta, nagu väidavad filosoofid. Vastastikkuse ülim žest. See allub üksnes piiramatule huvile teise suhtes, kellegi suhtes, kes pole mina. Me oleme õnnelikud, et hotelli juhtkond on huvitatud meie seiklusest ja pakub välja Sokos Hotel meie külalislahkuse festivali keskkonnana.

     Programm ulatub valmis teostest olukordadeni, sekkumisteni, etenduslike kesete, giidituuride ja tellitud etendusteni, mis on sündinud spetsiaalselt festivali tarbeks. Kunstnikud integreerivad antud keskkonna oma projektidesse ja põimivad seega kokku erinevaid teatraalsuse ja ühiskondlikkuse, tegelikkuse ja kujuteldavuse ning külalise ja võõrustaja kontseptsioone. Kuid esmalt ja põhiliselt on võtmeks kunstiline mängulisus, mis avab ukse teiega suhtlemiseks! Kuna me tahame, et te kogeksite meie tõlgendust kunstilisest külalislahkusest maksimumini ja jääksite meiega võimalikult kauaks, on paljud etendused ilma sissepääsutasuta või väga mõistliku piletihinnaga. On Hospitality

     This year, the NU Performance Festival leaves the theatre scene behind and conquers the stage of everyday life: From November 7–10, 2011, the biannual festival for international contemporary performance and theatre is hosted exclusively at the Sokos Hotel Viru. During four days, around 50 performance and theatre artists present work that has been originally created for or adapted to the hotel’s premises. In the light of the festivities related to Tallinn – European Capital of Culture 2011, we have invited artistic contributions that revolve around the idea and practice of hospitality.

     In times where Europe is closing its frontiers, where social and ethnic minorities are being treated as outcast foreigners, where the Other has to assimilate to prevalent codes, and where the arts appear superfluous in the face of multiple crises, the question of hospitality is increasingly important. What does it mean to be a host, to be a guest? What is the performance of hospitality? What are the related gestures in the arts and in society? And how  should togetherness be shared? However, we are not seeking answers to be declared in manifestos, pamphlets, or treatises. Instead, we are interested in the small gestures that occur in social situations, in the direct exchange of practices, in actions, in the reciprocality of togetherness. The festival attempts to provide a field where some of these questions can take shape and be tested in practice. We want the festival to leave the aesthetic security of the black box and dive into the contingencies of social life: performance is powerful enough to change and have an impact on what’s going on outside the playing field we are used to call stage and theatre.

     Sokos Hotel Viru and its changeable history seem to offer a promising venue for our idea to deal with and, after all, perform hospitality. After taking the hotel’s KGB-tour, we understood once more that hospitality is perverted if it is abused by the arbitrariness of a ruling party or subjected to an élite of any kind. Hospitality is “unconditional”, as philosophers say, the ultimate gesture of mutuality. Its only subject is boundless interest in the Other, in the one that is not me. We are happy that the hotel management is interested in our adventure and is providing us with the Sokos Hotel Viru as proper environment for our festival on hospitality.

     The program ranges from ready-made pieces, situations, interventions, performative hubs, guided tours, or performances especially commissioned for the festival. The artists will integrate the given environment into their projects and thus intertwine different concepts of theatricality and the social, of the real and the envisioned, of guest and host. But first and foremost their artistic playfulness is the key to opening the door to exchange and communication with you! Since we want you to enjoy our artistic interpretation of hospitality to the utmost and stay with us as long as possible, many of the shows are for free or very moderately priced.
