In Pieces of Music, Estonian performers and musicians Eleonora and Kalle Tikas share their music with their audience. What sounds very simple at first is in fact a more complex procedure. How do you share music with others since music is physically not graspable, has no tangible shape? How to make music into a real gift? Thus Eleonora and Kalle work on “how to materialize music and give it to their guests like presents”. They take apart playback devices, make music with the leftovers, and instantaneously tape their mix of songs, voices, and music on compact cassettes. An interplay of objects and music, of machines for music and the music of machines -- a gift of music.

Eleonora Tikas is an Estonian vocal artist who develops solo projects and participates in collaborative works in the context of performances, installations and avant-garde jazz music. She shares her interest in improvisation with Kalle Tikas which has led to a close and intense collaboration.
Kalle Tikas is an Estonian musician who composes works for theatre and performance like the united dancers of ZUGA, as well as for bands like the Estonian Guitar Octet (EGO), Estonian Bad Dream Big Band and Beggars Farm. His work is released on many records, including Beggars Farm’s Klob (2009) or EGO’s Hostages Incidents (2010).

LIFT
performans / performance
Lift / Elevator

Idee ja teostus / Creation and Performance: Kaja Kann

Liftis, väikses, kokkusurutud ruumis, peavad võõrad teineteisega aega vältimatu ajavahemiku jooksul, mis neil kulub oma ruumideni jõudmiseks. Liftikambris on võõrandumine ja lähedus omavahel vältimatult seotud, mille tulemuseks on ebamugav vaikus ja teadlik teineteise ignoreerimine. Eesti kunstnik Kaja Kann on festivali ajal LIFTis ja otsib hetke, kus võõrastest võivad saada sõbrad, kus ühiskondlike reservatsioonide barjäär muutub naeratuseks.

Hiljuti tegi ta koostööd Mart Kangroga viimase uues etenduses Talk To Me.
www.zuga.ee

In an elevator, a tiny, cramped space, strangers have to inevitably share time in order to be brought to their respective rooms. Strangeness and intimacy are unavoidably interconnected, resulting in an uneasy silence and conscious ignorance. Estonian artist Kaja Kann who is staying in such a LIFT for the duration of the festival searches for the moment when strangers can become friends, when the barrier of social reservation turns into a smile.

The choreographer and performer Kaja Kann is member of several performance collectives like the united dancers of ZUGA. For many years she was part of the creative board of the Kanuti Gildi SAAL; from 2001 to 2010 she was the artistic head of the youth circus company OMAtsirkus. Together with Juha Valkeapää she has founded the band At Lokaal tonight Kann/Valkeapää. Recently she collaborated with Mart Kangro in his new performance Talk to Me.

Juan Dominguez (ESP/DEU)

Room 950
Performatiivne installatsioon / performative situation
Hotellituba, 9. korrus / Hotel room, 9th floor

Autor / Creation: Juan Dominguez

Kas keegi on voodi all?

Room 950, a project by Spanish performer and director Juan Dominguez, plays with the notion of representation. The performance turns the spectator into an actor, making him perform own expectation. What’s behind the closet door? Is someone under the bed? And foremost who is the person in the mirror?

Juan Dominguez, born in Valladolid in 1964, is a performer, choreographer, stage director and curator. He lives and works in Berlin and Madrid. Since 1987 he has worked as a performer and artistic assistant with various choreographers and companies in Europe. Since 1992 he has been developing his own work, based on questions related to theatre as a medium and the parameters of dance -- time and space. Exploring the relationship between the different codes, his work advocates the complete dissolution of the separation of fiction and reality. Currently he is focusing on the question of how to radicalize the necessity of creation and the repercussions of choreographic work.

Ta oli üks festivali IN TRANSIT 2002 ja 2003 kuraatoreid, mida korraldas House of World Cultures in Berlin.

At the core of the festival, we have been able to invite different theatre makers to create three “performative hubs”, artistic distributors designed to welcome the visitor as a guest and give his or her stay a performative framing. The audience may stay with the hubs throughout the evening or proceed from there to other events, to the rooms, to other shows and performances, and come back again. These hubs tackle the practice of hospitality in three different ways.

On the last day of the festival Singaporean artist Ong Keng Sen and Belgian dramaturge Elke Van Campenhout open the Bar Bogart for a very particular talk show. In the course of five hours, the GIFT SHOW brings together festival artists and a group of local artists and thinkers to create a hospitable and relaxed space for reflection, talk, and entertainment. Based on the most basic principle of hospitality, guests and hosts exchange gifts and talk, entering into a merry-go-round of conversation settings. For this evening, the bar is turned into a meeting space for strangers, picking up on their experiences of the festival, the hotel, the city, the artistic life, the world economy, and anything else that binds us together. But what is it that we have to give to the other? When does a gift become poisoned or simply misunderstood? And where do we go from there?

Elke Van Campenhout is an artistic researcher and writer. She worked as a critic for a Flemish newspaper and radio station, was the editor of the performance magazine Etcetera and collaborated as a dramaturge with workspace nadine and the Kunstenfestivaldesarts in Brussels. She is currently one of the developers and artistic coordinators of the a.pass research program. www.alphavillle.be
Ong Keng Sen is the head and director of the theatre group Theatre Works. Beside his own artistic theatre work, he has started the pan-Asian creative laboratory, The Flying Circus Project, which is a long-term research and development program. It explores Asian art in the 21st century and focuses on the creative strategies used by individual artists from all genres, from traditional to contemporary art. He was the co-curator of the annual IN TRANSIT festivals in 2002 and 2003, which are organized by the House of World Cultures in Berlin. www.theatreworks.org.sg

Teid haaratakse kaasa tavalise hotellitoa müstilisse minevikku. Olete seal tegelikult üksi või tunnete, kuidas ruum hingab? Kas jääte vaikseks pealtvaatajaks või saab teist loo tegelane?
www.deepblue.be

Heine Avdal õppis tantsu, koreograafiat ja videot Oslo Rahvuslikus Kunstikolledžis ja P.A.R.T.S.-is Brüsselis.
Tema esimene koomiksiraamat Strimb Life avaldati 2009. aastal.

In their intimate and playful performances, the Brussels based artists Heine Avdal (Norway) and Yukiko Shinozaki (Japan) set out in search of the poetry of the everyday. Through tiny shifts in reality they create a dreamy, absurd in-between world. Field Works – hotel is a performance for one spectator at a time. You will be immersed in the mysterious past of an ordinary hotel room. Are you really here all alone or can you feel the room breathe? Will you remain a silent spectator or will you become a character in a story?
http://www.deepblue.be

Heine Avdal studied dance, choreography and video at the Oslo National College of the Arts and at P.A.R.T.S. in Brussels. During 1997-2001 he worked with Meg Stuart’s company Damaged Goods. Since 2000 he has been collaborating with Yukiko Shinozaki, founding their collective deepblue together with Christoph De Boeck in 2002. He also develops installation performances. Spatiality, information processing and replication are recurring topics in the output of deepblue and the collaborative work of the involved artists.
Brynjar Bandlien is a performer and comic strip artist based in Oslo and Berlin, received his education in his native country Norway at Staten Balletthøgskole in Oslo, and at the Ballettschule der Hamburgischen Staatsoper. After joining the Nederlands Dans Theater 2 in Den Haag in 1995, he started dancing and choreographing with Manuel Pelmus, Philipp Gehmacher, Raimund Hoghe, Vera Mantero, Antonija Livingstone and Heather Kravas. He is currently working on a long-term project named Romanian Dance History. His first comic book Strimb Life was published in 2009.
Fabrice Moinet is a programmer and sound engineer born in France, studied mathematics and science at the University of Bordeaux. He was a forum member of the IRCAM; he taught at the National Audiovisual Institute in Paris and was invited to the MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology). He is engineering the sound for numerous jazz and improvisation concerts and creating specific sonic set-ups for installations, concerts and performances.

Osalus on vaevu vajalik! Viimaks olete TEIE, me kallis publikum, meie väljavalitud, TEIE olete osalised, TEIE olete selle saavutanud! Sest see tähendab pöörasemat meelelahutust kui te olete osanud oodata!
Ham’s view on teine osa seeriast The Last Salon I-III, mis on loodud ja teostatud selle festivali jaoks. Esmene osa (Shem’s view) kantakse ette teisipäeval ja selle viimane osa (Japhet’s Thought) installatsiooni kontekstis neljapäeval.

Alates 2007. aastast komponeerivad esineja Andreas A. Müller ja tšellomängija Bo Wiget laule, mis tegelevad varjatud huumori võtmes meie igapäevaelu raskustega. Kunstnikud on naljakad eksistentsiaalsed intellektuaalid vanamoelistes ülikondades, keda tuleb nende katses, saada aru maailmast nende ümber, võtta surmtõsiselt. Nende etteasted väldivad klassikalisi teatriformaate ja balanseerivad kontserdi, kabaree, tantsu ja häppeningi vahepeal. Müller ja Wiget laulavad, mängivad ja esinevad ilma turvarihmadeta, olles alatasa kukkumisohus. Milline segadus.

Beide Messies (eng. Both Messies) bid you a warm welcome to the Last Salon! Make yourself at home for you are going to experience reckless entertainment for the last time. While the catastrophe takes its inevitable course you are going to float in the ark of high culture and, under the patronage of Noah’s last sons, reach farther than any imaginable abyss. With the help of the last songs and last dances for the last time, the hosts Beide Messies will order the very last things. Participation is barely necessary! Eventually, YOU, dear audience, are the elected, YOU are part of it. YOU have made it! Since this means more fun than you have ever expected!
Ham’s view is the first part of the Last Salon I – III series that was conceived and realized for this festival. The first part (Shem’s view) is shown on Tuesday; the final part (Japhet’s Thought) is presented in the context of an installation on Thursday.

Since 2007, performer Andreas A. Müller and cellist Bo Wiget have composed songs that deal tongue-in-cheek with the obstacles of the everyday. The artists are funny existential intellectuals in old-fashioned suits who must be taken totally seriously in their attempt to make sense of the world around them. Their performances escape classic theatrical formats and hover between concert, dance, cabaret, and art happening. Müller and Wiget sing, play, perform without handrails, always in danger to take a bad fall. What a mess.

a.pass-i kunstnikud on dialoogis hotelliga läbi peente interventsioonide.

The a.pass artists negotiate the hotel through subtle interventions. Their works are created through dialogue during the reading sessions of their week-long workshop Hospitality and Estrangement and question the logic of mobility and encounter in the hotel corridors. Who is the guest and who is the host in this environment? What is my private space and what are the rules of etiquette? How do I relate to others and on what grounds? Some of their interventions are public, some of them ghostly (in-)visible, some can only be visited on invitation. The central trace space documents the workshop and the trajectory of the group and provides insight into the artistic issues at stake.

a.pass is an artistic research environment at the post-master level, open to artists and theoreticians. a.pass offers an experimental space and instruments to develop research skills in a shared and collaboratively created knowledge-based environment. Every researcher can translate his personal project into a tailor-made curriculum.

Lavastus loodi 2007. aastal Prantsuse esineja ja koreograafi Alice Chauchat poolt koostöös Horvaatia esinejatega Eks-Scena residentsi ajal Zagrebis.
The work was created in 2007 by the French performer and choreographer Alice Chauchat in collaboration with Croatian performers during an artistic residence at Eks-Scena in Zagreb.
The Love Piece pakub installatiivset keskkonda 20-le inimesele, kellest moodustub pilkude teater. See, mida selline armastus võiks tähendada, ongi etenduse teemaks. The Love Piece on üleskutse kogeda etendust kui tunnete kohtumispaika, kusjuures publik võtab osa emotsioonide vahetusest. Lavastus toodab lähedust ilma meid ehmatamata – sellist, mis tuleb otse südamest, küsides koos Briti bändi Whitesnake’iga: Is it love that I am feeling?

The Love Piece provides an installational set-up for 20 people, which establishes a theatre of the gaze. As they come in, the spectators are taken by the hand by a performer who for the duration of the show will “give love” to his/her audience. What this love can be, is at stake in the piece. The Love Piece is an invitation to experience the performance as an affective encounter, with the audience sharing in the production of the emotional exchange. It produces intimacy without intimidation, direct and straight to the heart: “Is this love that I am feeling?” to ask in the manner of the British band Whitesnake?
